50 years ago, more than 60 thousand weavers wove carpets in Iran. Now, only one-tenth of those weavers remain. Faltering economy, low wages, and U.S. sanctions against the exportation of Iranian carpets, and machine-made products are main reasons. The first step in producing a rug is preparing a pattern that weavers can follow, step by step. Modern spinning machines turn the material into spools of yarn. The yarn is then dipped into boiling pots of dye. After drying, cotton threads are stitched to a loom to form a warp and then skillful weavers take over.
